Christophe Audoire went to se the French movie “Chocolat” featuring Omar Sy. There’s a reference to a famous theater actress of the time, who has a role in a theater play with him towards the end of the film: Régina Badet. The latter contributed to the promotion of skating in the late 19th C. – early 20th C. In her heydays, she made the covers of the magazines of the time, when she left the Grand Théâtre of Bordeaux to settle in Paris.

“In my collection, I had this 1910 Femina magazine on which she is a cover feature. A whole page is dedicated to her passion for the sport in fashion at the time of the Belle Epoque: Roller skating! Indeed, skating has never been more in vogue than between 1880 and 1910. The Parisian high society of the time that practiced leisure sports would go skating at the roller rinks of Paris.
Each hotel had to have a rink next to its tennis courts.”
About “Chocolat”
“Chocolat” is a French biopic directed by Roschdy Zem, released in 2016. It is inspired by the book by Gérard Noiriel: Chocolat, clown nègre : l’histoire oubliée du premier artiste noir de la scène française (Bayard, 2012).
