2014 Men’s Roller-derby World Cup in Birmingham (England)

The first Men’s Roller-derby World Cup will be held on the 14th through the 16th of March, 2014, in Birmingham, England. This is the first First international championship to be recognized by an international governing body, the MRDA. Not affiliated with the Blood & Thunder World Cup.

This is also the first tournament to feature all bouts broadcast simultaneously in multiple languages, with a total of 7 languages being used in official broadcasts.  Languages for the knockout stages will be determined when the teams participating in those bouts is determined.

Many teams formed for the express purpose of contesting this tournament, but the two highly successful Battle of the Beasts tournaments showed the calibre of the game in Europe.

17 countries have applied to enter the competition. The organization has formally extended invitations to the following nations’ teams:

Structure

On Friday, teams compete within colour-coded groups, playing a round-robin format of half-hour bouts. The teams are then ranked by wins first, then points difference.

The first and second ranked teams in each group advance to the knockout stages for the cup. Teams that lose in the first round play for the plate, those that lose in the second round play for 3rd place. Any loss in the plate semifinals results in elimination.

The remaining teams advance to the knockout stages for the bowl. Teams that lose in the first round play for the jug. Any loss in the second round and forward results in elimination.
