More than ever, the speed skating event of Dijon leaves a permanent mark in the world of international skating. The casting expected in the Allées du Parc on Sunday June, 14th is obviously the stuff all skate and sports performance lovers’ dreams are made of…
What are the criteria that make a race mythical? The number of skaters? The number of teams? The number of represented nations? The number of world champions on the start line? The number of spectators? The challenges? The atmosphere?
Very few events in the world have met all those criteria at once, for more than 10 years. Fore sure, you shouldn’t miss this 15th edition.
The long-awaited clash!
Who is going to win the 2015 edition? Hard to guess, it’s time to make your bets!
Bart Swings? The skating alien seems to have the best rating given his current fitness and his experience. He won the first stage of the World Cup in Rennes and his team, Powerslide Matter World, is probably the most powerful and better organized. And if Swing is not on top form on D-Day, several other skaters could impose themselves. Like the Dutch Peter Mickael, the 2014 10 km world champion.
The outsider Guillaume de Mallevoue, the 2014 Dijon winner, will be much closely watched after this year. Indeed, the young skater has improved even more and will have, by his side as his team mate, Yann Guyader, the multiple world champion, winner of the marathon world cup and twice silver medallist in Dijon behind the Belgian.
And the list of favorites goes on! The Eoskates Team will be there too, with Ewen Fernandez, 2nd in Rennes, world champion of the 20 km elimination race on road and 2nd at the 2014 marathon of Rosario. He will be assisted by Nolan Beddiaf, 4th in Rennes, and Quentin Giraudeau, a young French rising star, also double world champion in 2014.
But beware of the last minute surprise guest, the Simmons Rana Racing Team made of Alexis Contin and the American Joey Mantia! The one is the current marathon world champion, with no less than 10 titles on his list; The other makes his great comeback to inline skating competition after an ice skating interlude to take part in the 2014 Winter Olympics. It will be the first apperance in Dijon of the undisputed star of the 2003-2011 international skating scene! With 28 world titles, there’s no doubt that the American has the experience needed to see the race through the end.
As for the locals, Doucelin Pédicone will be there this year again. For his first marathon in 2014, he finished in the Juniors’ Top-3. Even if he has no chance of victory, the youngster, European Champion in 2013 and 2014, will be keen on standing out and skating for the flag of the organizing club.
On the Women’s side, the pack, even less dense, remains of quality. The young Chinese Dan Guo, 2nd in 2014 in Dijon, is part of the favorites. She will be closely watched after by the Powerslide armada and its stars, such as the German Katarina Rumpus and the Dutch Manon Kamminga.
The French women are not outdone either. Clémence Halbout (BONT Team), the 2013 winner of Dijon, is most able to play her cards right against the opposing teams. There will also be Juliette Pouydebat (Pibrac), the winner of Rennes this year, in front of the Polish Alexandra Goss, 2nd at the general ranking of the 2014 WIC. Last but not least, Flavie Balandras (Lyon Roller), makes a strong comeback after a 2-year break dedicated to her studies, and might be an outsider to keep an eye on.
