The World Inline Speed Skating Championships start at the end of next week in Haining, China. Bart Swings and Ferre Spruyt are packing their bags, getting ready to race at the highest level.
The World Championships are by far the most important and spectacular races of the year. Since the great successes of the Belgium squat at the European Championships in their home country, winning multiple gold’s, all their focus has been on the coming championships in China. Bart Swings is about to enter his first senior World’s, and is looking forward to it. « I am very thrilled about racing there. It’s the first time I will be racing in Asia, so for me this is a great happening. The venue looks impressive! »
« The organization in Asia is always superb and the atmosphere is great », says Ferre Spruyt, who already skated four competitions in Asia before. He will be the worker for Bart in most races: « But if I do good, some good results should be possible for me too. The points/elimination and the elimination race suit me best. » The preparation from the Europeans to the Worlds have been good for both athletes. They have been training hard since and competed in some races in the Netherlands. « I have focused 100% on my training, as I had no school obligations », says Bart Swings. « A top five is what should be within my possibilities, and who knows… maybe I end up with a medal. »
