2015 Worlds of Speed Skating in Kaohsiung: 2nd Day – Long Distance Races

2nd day of competition in Kaohsiung (Chinese Taipei)

The sprint series took place in the morning and the long distance races followed in the afternoon, before the finals in the evening.

Junior Women: 15 km elimination race, a Colombian double

Luz Karime Garzon (COL) is definitely in the place this year! She had finished 2nd in Rosario 2014 behind Sandrine Tas (BEL). After her victory at the point and elimination race yesterday, the Colombian seizes the first place of the elimination today, in front of Korean Jeong Goeun (KOR). Her team mate Daniela Lindarte (COL) completes the podium.
South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Colombia played a leading role throughout the race, relegating the European nations to further in the rankings. The first European, German Josie Hoffmann, ends up 8th.

Junior Men: 15 km elimination race, Colombia again

Colombia gets the gold once again with Carlos Franco (COL), efficiently covered by his team mate Fabian Valencia, who gets 5th place. The Colombian outdistances South Korean Jeong Byeonkwan (KOR – 2nd), Italian Daniel Niero (ITA – 3rd) and French Quentin Giraudeau (FRA – 4th). Franco succeeds Manuel Saavreda who had won in Rosario 2014 in front of Fabian Valencia.

Senior Men’s Final of the 10 km point/elimination race

The least to say is that Alexis Contin (FRA) didn’t give much chance to his opponents! The French broke away solo quite early in the race. Italian Stefano Mareschi was the only one who managed to follow him until a few laps before the arrival. When Alexis decided to speed up, he let the Italian high and dry and almost caught up on the pack with a one-lap lead. Alexis Contin (37 points – FRA) crosses the finish line first, in front of Stefano Mareschi (29 points – ITA). Behind them, Gwangho Choi (2 points – KOR) and Mauricio Garcia (1 point – DOM) had to make do with the left-overs. The 2014 race was tighter with 5 skaters in a 3-point range.

Senior Women’s Final of the 10 km point/elimination race

The senior women’s race had more twists and turns than that of the men’s, for our greatest pleasure, with many attacks at the front, led by Argentina, Colombia, Chinese Taipei and France. Races are rarely that tight by the way, only 2 points separate the Top-6!

Korea finally made the difference: Woo Hyp Sook (12 points – KOR) imposes herself in front of her team mate Yu Garam (11 points – KOR), tied on points with Yang Ho-Chen (11 points – TPE), the first South American Johana Viveros (11 points – COL) and Argentinian Fabiana Arias (11 points – ARG). They were ranked by the order of arrival. Last year in Rosario, the title had gone to Johana Viveros.
