European Championships: second day of competition on the track of Almere (Netherlands)
500m Junior Ladies
Sandrine Tas (BEL, 44,915) was the fastest in the final of the 500m junior ladies. She beat Alisa Gutermuth (GER, 44,957) and Anais Laurent (FRA, 46,261). Carlotta Simbula (ITA, 45,900) took the fourth place.
500m Junior Men
Once more, Simon Albrecht (GER, 42,102) war far above his opponents in this final. The German skater got the first place in front of the opportunistic Stefano Gili (ITA, 42,423) and Alexandre Guyomard (FRA, 42,427). Only five thousandths difference between the two skaters!
Mathias Voste (BEL, 42,472) stays off to the podium.
500m Senior Ladies
Same competitors and same results as the first day: Laethisia Schimek (GER, 44,295) beat Erika Zanetti (ITA, 44,338) and Jana Gegner (GER, 44,477) once again. Sabine Berg (GER, 44,539) missed the podium. Three German skaters in top 4!
500m Senior Men
Everybody was waiting for the performance of the Dutch World Champion Michel Mulder and he has not disappointed his audience… but the fate was with him! In the final, Michel Mulder crossed the white line, synonymous with disqualification, but the judges did not sanctioned him as they did for Gwendal Lepivert (FRA) in the semi-final. The second place is Nicolas Pelloquin (FRA, 40,969) thanks to a nice hawk finish against Andrea Angeletti (ITA, 41,014). Mark Horsten (NED, 41,020) is fourth.
Point/Elimination Race – Junior Ladies
After her victory in the elimination race, the French Déborah Marchand was favorite for the point/elimination race. Well supported by her teammates Anaïs Laurent and Marie Poidevin, Déborah Marchand grabbed 21 points during the race. The second place belongs to Annemarie Boer (NED) with « only » 7 points… far from the winner ! Giulia Lollobrigida (ITA) completes the podium with 4 points.
Point/Elimination Race – Junior Men
The race was more balanced in the Junior Men category with active nations such as Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. The italian skaters collected most of the points. Stefano Mareschi (ITA) took the first place with 9 points after a long escape. Thimo Kiesslich (GER, 6 points) is second and Alessio Paciolla (ITA, 6 points) is third. The local skater Jordy Harink (NED, 5 points) missed the podium for one point.
Point/Elimination Race – Senior Ladies
We assisted to an unexpected scenario in the senior ladies point/elimination race. Everbody was waiting for the local star Manon Kamminga (NED) but she fell during the race, while she was getting points in a nice hawk finish against a German skater.
The Dutch public can count on a strong team composed with Elma De Vries, Irene Schouten and Manon Kamminga. Elma got the first points, followed by Irene… but Irene was really strong and escaped from the podium. So Manon decided to temporize… then she fell and lost her chances. The French skater Justine Halbout (FRA) took some points before the end of the race.
The final sprint is launched, Mareike Thum collected the last points, but not enough. Irene Schouten (NED, 8 points) gets the continental title ahead of Mareike Thum (GER, 3 points) and Justine Halbout (FRA, 3 points). Elma de Vries (NED, 3 points) stays off to the podium.

Men’s race was awesome with suspens from the beginning to the end! Fabio Francolini was the favorite but the surprise came from Spain. The German skater Felix Rihjnen did also an impressive race, collecting 13 points. He escaped with his Powerslide’s teammate Livio Wenger (SUI). Fabio Francolini (ITA) and Ariens Crispijn (NED) did their best to close the gap but Paxti Peula (Spain) did a clever race. He collected a few points at the beginning of the race and escaped in the last laps when the pack was exhausted by continuous sprints.
Patxi Peula (ESP, 13 points) is victorious in front Felix Rijhnen (GER, 13 points) and Ariens Crispijn (NED, 10 points). Fabio Francolini (ITA, 10 points) took the worst place.
Medals ranking
In the overall medal ranking, Italy consolidated his lead with no less than four gold medals. Germany did a good harvest with as much gold and silver as Italy and only two bronze medals less. The Netherlands harvested only six medals at home so far, but three are the most precious metal. France is not far from the leading group with a total of 10 medals but only 2 gold medals. These four nations have taken a wide lead in the overall ranking.
Germany owes its rise to its women team who collected twice more medals than men. France can thank Anais Laurent for her performance (two gold medals). The Italian train is driven by men.
