Portugal is determined to win their first title at the 2016 Women’s Worlds in Iquique, Chile, in late September. The technical team set a training program in order to achieve this result.
Indeed the Portuguese, despite having taken part in all the World Competitions, just like Spain and the USA, and despite having won several times the European (and Vice-Euro) titles, have never won the World title yet. At the last Worlds in Tourcoing, France, the team ranked in 5th position.
Their best result was their 2008 vice-world champions title in Yuri Honjo, Japan, after a final they lost against Spain, 1 to 3.
At the last Worlds that took place in Chile in 2006, Portugal had lost during the quarter finals on the tight score of 3 to 4 against Chile, who was to become the world champion. That also shows how dangerous the Chilean team is going to be at home.
But back to 2016: the third training started on May 2nd, at the national training center « Gimnodesportivo do Luso », under the lead of national coach Carlos Pires. Except for Rita Lopes, the same players as for the second training of April, 4th, were there. The first training had taken place as soon as February. The last camp is scheduled just before the trip to Chile.
The Portuguese selection today is made of 3 goal keepers and 10 field players, from 6 different clubs. 5 of them played at the 2014 Worlds in Tourcoing.
