On September 2nd, 2017 will take place the opening ceremony of the first Roller Games. The collaboration between the city of Nankin (Cina) and the FIRS bore fruits: One year ago, the idea germinated in the heads of Sabatino Aracu (president of the FIRS) and of Mr. Ruilin, Mayor of Nankin.
Skating in Schools
Today, 52.000 children practise skating in the Chinese city, and 12.000 already take part in competitions! The city has implemented an ambitious policy towards skating, developing events such as the world championships of speed skating and a non-competitive marathon, bootcamps and the practice of skating in schools. 16 primary schools are already active. The objective of the city is to reach 60 schools and 200.000 children within the next 4 years. A great objective for the 8-million-people city.
Sports facilities adapting to skating
A skating museum should also see the light (FIRS Roller Olympic Museum). Deserted areas have been turned into skateparks, 4 speed skating tracks have been built in Nankin, and one of them measures 200 m, with bent turns, to host international competitions.
The Roller Games should benefit from the existing facilities, with many rooms with capacities of 3.000 to 5.000 seats. The Olympic stadium, with its 10.000 seats should host the artistic skating competitions. The Asian Indoor Stadium (20.000 seats), located in the Olympic park, will be finished in August and will be accessible for the Roller Games.
After the Youth Olympics and the upcoming speed skating worlds, Nankin seems determined to go through its ambitions with the Roller Games.
