We got the composition of the men’s roller derby team of Wales for the upcoming 2014 Roller-Derby World Cup in Birmingham (England)…

Wales is a nation of 3 million people over 8,000 square miles (21,000 square km). It was first unified as a nation in 1057 by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, which is really fun to say. Many Welsh words are, such as Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, a town in the north.

There is one men’s league in Wales, the South Wales Silures. They usually skate out of Cardiff, and the short form of the name (SWS) forms the Welsh word for « kiss. » As well, the country is home to several women’s derby leagues, including one of the best in the UK and the only team to defeat London’s Brawl Saints, the Tiger Bay Brawlers. The most popular sport in Wales, other than derby, is Rugby.

Team Wales’ motto, Bid Ben Bid Bont, means « Let the leader be the bridge » in Welsh. Besides the derby pun, it’s a tale from the Mabinogion, the book of Welsh legends. In it, the army of Welsh prince Bran must cross a ravine, so Bran, who happens to be a giant, lies across the ravine to form a bridge with his body.
