Roller-skating is running for the 2020 Games (once again)

Thanks to the British Federation of Roller Sports, we could see a bit of roller-skating at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. And according to our sources, it seems that this is not due to the efforts of the FIRS (International Federation of Roller Sports)!

Speed-skating is entering the race again to earn its place among the Olympic sports. After the refusal of 2009, roller speed-skating is one of the eight candidates vying for the 2020 Summer Games.

The 123rd IOC Session held recently in Durban (South Africa) and Jacques Rogues, IOC President has announced at a press conference the list of sports competing. The choice should be announced at the 125th meeting in 2013 in Buenos Aires.

Roller-skating will end up once again to face candidates from 2009 such as squash, baseball and softball or karate. New disciplines such as wakeboarding, wushu and climbing have applied this year.

The selection criteria have changed, sports such as surfing, dancing, bowling, netball or speed skating, more dynamic and spectacular for a younger audience, have a chance to get into the circle of Olympic sports. In addition, their equipment needs are rather weak.
