Summary of the last day of group phases

Group A: Colomba 6 – 2 Brazil

Colombia needed a win to reach the quarter finals, it’s now a done deal after this South American derby against Brazil. Two goals were scored by Andrea Rodriguez, and two others by Juanita Alzate. Paola Gutiérrez and Camila Morales gave two more goals to Colombia. On the Brazilian side, Marília Pestana and Adriana Costa reduced the score gap. During second period, the Brazilian goal keeper took a ball in the throat. She got taken care of by the medics and recovered well.

Group A: Argentina 3 – 0 Italy

Espagne Afrique du SudIn beating Italy, Argentina secured first place of Group A. Salome Rodriguez (2 goals) and Luciana Agudo (1 goal) scored for Argentina, putting pressure on Sara Zarantonello. During the quarter finals, Argentina will meet Colombia, on Thursday at 6.30pm.

Group B: Spain 11 – 0 South Africa

The South Africans, ranked last of Group B, had to meet the Spanish, the current leaders of the ranking. Without surprises, the Iberians won hands down with a heavy score of 11 to 0. The goals were scored by Anna Casarramona, María Díez, Natasha Lee, Laura Puigdueta, Marta González, Sara González, and Berta Tarrida. Spain will face Italy for their quarter finals game.

After the game, South African coach Joaquin Coimbra publicly apologized for his inappropriate behavior during the Portugal game.

Group B: France 1 – 3 Portugal

The evening game opposed France to Portugal for second place of Group B. At first, both teams managed to neutralize each other, before Portugal finally opened the score with Sofía Silva. Despite good intentions and many attempts at penalty shootout, France didn’t manage to score.
Frédérique Denest equalized, a few minutes before the end of regulation time. The French got more zealous, at the image of the shot by Célia Gohet hitting the corner of the cage. Portugal retaliated and Rute Lopes increased the score gap. The French score was sealed when they got a blue card and let another goal in, scored by Marlene Sousa, 8 seconds before the bell. The performance of French goal keeper Flora Michoud Godard was once more impressive during this game.

Inde USANext game for France: quarter finals against Chile! As for Portugal, they will meet Germany.

Group C: India 0 – 7 USA

The USA won their first game of the event, against the weakest team of the tournament: India. Kimberly Hughes, Ashley Coll, and Ciara Ashlock scored twice each. Kaylee Logan completed the score for the USA.
The game was heavy on penalties on both sides. Rachel Trussell got her second blue card, Sonia had the first red card of the event. India was outnumbered, with only 3 players remaining. Gulratan Singh Rattore also got expelled.

Group C: Chile 4 – 0 Germany

The hosting nation won the game against Germany and in so doing, finished first of group C. Chile scored 34 goals in total and didn’t let a single one in (let’s mention that Group C was the most lenient group). Alexa Tapia, Fernanda Urrea, Catalina Flores, and Francisca Donoso scored for Chile.

Chile will now meet France for their quarter finals game!
